Psychotherapy
If you have found this page, you are likely considering therapy or psychotherapy as an opportunity to promote your growth and wellbeing. Nathania’s practice is rooted in a holistic approach that addresses your bio-psycho-social needs. Rather than specifically focussing on a client’s mind, changing behaviour, or approaching therapy from a medical-dominant lens, Nathania helps clients explore the multitude of relationships a client has - with themselves, others, and the greater community - and focus on the strengths a client possesses, rather than focussing on shortcomings. There are so many different approaches to therapy amongst providers (Social Workers, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists, for example). Nathania draws from diverse theories and modalities to help you find the best fit. You can be absolutely assured that you will be included in the conversations and decision points as psycho-education and informed consent are at the top of Nathania’s priorities. Nathania offers a free, no obligation 15-minute consultation to see if her therapy services are a suitable match for you.
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is some of the hardest work you will ever do in your life. Despite so many benefits, therapy is challenging and is not without risk (e.g. emotional discomfort). Whereas you won’t be tired from a long day of manual labour, therapy often involves exploring pleasant and unpleasant memories, emotions, and events. You may discuss unpleasant emotions such as anxiety, sadness, guilt, shame, anger, and frustration throughout your therapy sessions. This is hard work! But its all very worth it!
Some clients experience changes and improvements that were not initially intended. While psychotherapy has the tendency to make emotions, situations, and distress more difficult in the short term, many clients improve overall by participating in therapy. This phenomenon of getting worse before you get better can be scary, but Nathania can help normalize your experience and guide you through the therapeutic process.
Nathania utilizes and offers a variety of therapy modalities in her practice. Some of these modalities are listed below with a short description and link to find out more information. Potential clients are invited to be as curious as they would like in learning on their own (from reputable sources), but nothing is required prior to beginning or continuing your therapy journey with Nathania.
EMDR
Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing is a popular modality that uses detailed protocols to address blockages that affect the brain’s ability to heal. More information about EMDR can be found at the following link: EMDR International Association
ART
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a newer therapy modality that incorporates techniques used in other traditional modalities. More information about ART can be found here.
PE
Prolonged Exposure utilizes two types of exposure (imaginal and in-vivo) to address trauma and avoidance. Gradual exposure allows the client to confront their trauma and become more comfortable in situations they used to avoid. More information about PE can be found here: US Dept Veterans Affairs
DBT
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based modality that helps clients learn and use new skills and strategies such as mindfulness and emotional regulation. More information about DBT can be found here:
CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a problem-focused and goal oriented modality that helps clients explore how their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs relate to the emotional and behavioural reactions that cause them difficulty. More information about CBT can be found here:
CBT-I
CBT for Insomnia focuses on the thoughts, behaviours, and feelings associated with a client’s sleep/insomnia. Sleep is so important! And this modality has shown great improvements for sleep in both short term and chronic conditions. More information about CBT-I can be found here: Sleep Foundation
